Should I See A Chiropractor If I’m Dealing With Pain From A Car Accident?

December 24, 2021

Getting involved in an accident may result in many things. Some get cuts or bruises, while others obtain serious injuries and end up needing to undergo surgery. One way or another, the pain of a car accident always surfaces, and experiencing pain disrupts a person’s routine and plans.

Some types of pain may be relieved by painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs. However, it’s still highly recommended to seek professional medical assistance, especially when experiencing unusual pain after an accident.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

When dealing with pain in the muscles, joints, bones, or connective tissues in the body, chiropractic care is the non-invasive pain relief alternative to seek.

A chiropractor doctor practices manually manipulating the spine. This is done to correct misalignment and restore movement to joints that may have been injured from an accident, a traumatic event such as slipping and falling, or stress caused by improper posture and sitting habits.

Chiropractic treatment, while done without the use of medicine, cannot be administered right away. The patient should undergo several examinations beforehand to thoroughly examine the cause of pain and see whether or not there are present abnormalities in the affected area. Once done, the patient can proceed with the treatment.

Chiropractors may also recommend other non-invasive treatments to go along with the adjustments, such as laser therapy, acupuncture, 3D active traction, and more.

Car Accidents and Pain

A car accident can result in minor to grave injuries to almost any portion of the body. Some injuries heal within a few days with no medical care, but others might need further medical attention.

Experiencing pain after an accident is expected. In some cases, the pain can be felt immediately. For others, pain may not be felt for a couple of days or weeks after the injury. These include neck and back pain.

The neck—when forced back-and-forth rapidly—can experience an injury called whiplash. This is one of the most common injuries caused by a car accident. Often, people recover from whiplash without treatment. However, full recovery may take place after a few months or so.

Here are some of the common symptoms of whiplash:

  • Difficulty in turning the head sideways or up and down
  • Swelling at the back of the neck
  • Stiffness
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling
  • Numbness in the arms within the first 24 hours after the injury

Back pain after an accident could be due to a muscle, ligament, or nerve injury. It is also possible that the spine’s vertebrae and discs were damaged. Unfortunately, there are cases wherein symptoms only arise after a few weeks.

When Do I Go To A Chiropractor?

An accident, particularly a vehicular accident, can cause injuries that only a skilled chiropractor can help out with. Taking pain relievers may reduce the symptoms momentarily, but it will not treat the underlying cause, which could lead to more health risks. Because some symptoms only develop weeks after the accident, it is best to seek medical attention right away to prevent them from worsening.

Chiropractors are trained to spot these underlying problems. They can administer orthopedic and neurological tests to identify damage in soft tissues, muscle strength, range of motion, and other pertinent factors that some doctors may overlook.
